Aches and Praise Two Hundred & Ninety Six

Dear friends,

What do you think of when you think of May? For some, it is flowers. If you live in the nation’s capital, you can’t help but be proud of the tulips that bloom so beautifully this month. For others, it is a month to celebrate birthdays. In our family, we look forward to watching my father and our daughter, Candace, blow out the candles on their birthday cake.

One person who has a special place in the hearts of many – Pastor Frank Humphrey – was born on May 12th two days before the state of Israel was declared. For many years, Frank taught God’s Word to children in the AWANA club of Peoples Church of Montreal. He did that in one of two gyms in the building where he taught high school many years earlier. My father and a member of Peoples –Warren Gamble – (who has the same birthday as me) attended the High School of Montreal before Pastor Frank was born. It is neat that my children played in the same gym as their grandfather did.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of watching my son, Ryan, share insights from the gospel of John with a group of men who play floor hockey and basketball on alternating Fridays, while children in the AWANA club meet in classrooms of FACE high school in downtown Montreal. Pastor Frank would be proud to know that some of those he taught are now teaching others. I was also very blessed to be greeted by a young man who left his goalie net to say hello to me. I didn’t recognize Andrew at first, as he was wearing a goalie mask and equipment. His father, Pastor Frank, would have loved to have been there, but he has been afflicted with ALS for the past twelve years.

Several people have contacted our ministry in recent weeks to ask for prayer. Michelle (pseudonym) has followed our Bible courses in French for many years. She is being persecuted in the building where she lives in Montreal. J.P., who lives in a facility for people with mental health challenges, is attending an evangelical church in Montreal and asks prayer that he would grow closer to the Lord. Pray for Monique (pseudonym) who is preparing to take an exam in order to be a nurse in Montreal. She asks for prayer regarding her husband, who has been acting harshly toward her.

Scripture for the weekend: “And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” 2 Timothy 2:2 (NASB)

Thought for the weekend: “Faith is believing that God will do as He has promised. It is not a power or something we must stir up inside ourselves. Faith is trusting that God will honor His promises because of His faultless character and limitless ability.” – Dr. Charles Stanley (from his book “The Spirit-Filled Life”)

By His grace,

Steve
