Aches and Praise Three Hundred & Twelve

Dear friends,

What does one say after “the wedding of the century”? A lot! Karen and I were blessed to reunite with family and friends, as well as to make new friends last weekend, as we gathered for the wedding of our daughter, Candace, to the love of her life: Richard Pendred. A round of golf was a fun way to start the festivities, which culminated with Candace and Richie “running the gauntlet” through a line of people holding sparklers, before they left to go to the United States, where they will reside.

When I say “the wedding of the century,” I am using my daughter’s words, of course. Seeing her devotion to her “hubby” brings back memories of courting Karen and reading her love letters to me over and over. Before leaving with her family to sing at a Christian conference in Montrose, Pennsylvania in the summer of 1981, Karen wrote me a letter for each day that she would be away. How I devoured every word of those letters!

That’s what the Word of God is to the child of God, isn’t it? It is God’s love letter to us and the Lord is pleased when we treat it with delight. A couple of days after our daughter’s wedding, Karen and I, along with our daughter, Bethany, flew to Toronto, on the first “leg” of a vacation. Before leaving home, we wondered what we would do during a layover of more than five hours. After having breakfast, we met a lady and her 91-year-old mother, who lives in London, England. When we learned that they were on their way to the wedding of her daughter in California, we had a wonderful time sharing experiences of family, travel and God’s Word.

How has your summer been? If I were to ask many Quebeckers, I would likely hear that they were disappointed with the weather. Hopefully, I would receive a different response from believers, appreciating God’s many blessings and opportunities to grow more like the Lord Jesus Christ.

Scripture for the weekend: “Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care. . . . It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.” 1 Peter 1:10, 12 (NIV)

Thought for the weekend: “There are only two things that Paul ever refers to as ‘the power of God.’ One is the gospel; the other is Christ Himself. As the story of the gospel is proclaimed, the Spirit Himself makes the heart come alive to see the glory and beauty of God revealed in it.” – J. D. Greear (from his book “Gospel”)

By His grace,

Steve
