Life is certainly filled with surprises, isn’t it? Earlier this morning, Karen and I were returning home, after visiting friends who live in the country. About halfway home, I saw a police car turn around in a parking area near a building and a minute later I saw the car in my rear view mirror. Having gotten a ticket many years ago for speeding when I didn’t see a reduced speed sign, I made a conscious effort to keep within the speed limit as the highway went through a couple of towns. After driving between 45 and 50 kilometres an hour through a town, I saw the lights flashing on top of the police car. I stopped the car and an officer told me that the speed limit was 70 km/hour. She wondered why I was driving so slowly. After asking me a few questions, including whether I had drunk anything last evening, she told me to be careful when I drove back on the highway.
Although I knew that I had not been speeding, I was not sure what would happen when the police officer approached our car. A few minutes later, I remembered that a young friend of ours got a ticket not far from where we were stopped. It is good to know that police are doing their job, especially when you haven’t broken the law. In case you were wondering, I had not been drinking alcoholic beverages, just flavoured water, at our friends’ house.
This week I have been reading a book that I first heard about from George Verwer of Operation Mobilization, in the 1970s. In “The Calvary Road,” Roy Hession wrote a chapter entitled “The Highway of Holiness” based on the 35th chapter of the book of Isaiah. Here is an excerpt: “The only way onto the Highway is up a small, dark, forbidding hill – the hill of Calvary. It is the sort of hill we have to climb on our hands and knees – especially our knees. If we are content with our present Christian life, if we do not desire with a desperate hunger to get onto the Highway, we shall never get to our knees and thus never climb the hill. But if we are dissatisfied, if we are hungry, then we will find ourselves ascending. Don’t hurry. Let God make you really hungry for the Highway; let Him really drive you to your knees in longing prayer.”
