Last Sunday, Karen and I were in a restaurant with friends when a few children passed our table. One friend commented: “There is the future.” The election campaign is underway in Canada and will be in the United States next year. Many people wonder whether there will be changes in their government. No one knows which leaders will be elected, but what is certain is that we are living in a world that is full of change.
Children today are surrounded by more electronic devices and communication sources than youth of previous generations. When I first heard that the World Wide Web was coming, I wondered if the spider population had exploded … just kidding! The digital revolution has made communication more accessible than ever before. I am amazed that we can see people all over the world on our smartphones and computer screens. In just a few seconds, I can send the weekly radio programme of “La Voix de l’Évangile” to our agent in Winnipeg, who oversees the network of stations that broadcast it.
At the beginning and end of each programme, there is part of a song by Richard Toupin, who is a very gifted musician. This week, I read his testimony on the Internet and was surprised to learn that his father died when Richard was very young, leaving Mme Toupin to raise seven children by herself. In Québec, families with more than five children are rare, in contrast to the many large families of sixty or seventy years ago. The Lord used a number of people to share the gospel with him before Richard trusted in Christ as his Saviour.
The same was true in my life, as I listened to a pastor (Robert Johnson) answer questions on the radio on Sunday evenings, went to a Sunday School class, and began following a Bible course through the mail. The man who corrected my lessons was Jim Yorgey, who had served the Lord in France before coming to Montréal for Expo ’67 and the outreach of Christians at the Sermons from Science pavilion organized by Christian Direction. I met Michel Martel, who was a counsellor at the pavilion, a few years later and had no idea that we would later work together in the radio ministry of Global Outreach Mission.
